General Hair Loss

You should start treatment with Nolopecia as soon as you notice you are losing hair. Try not to delay treatment as this can lead to further hair loss.
-
It is not possible to predict how much hair you will lose. Even if you look at other people in your family with hair loss your situation will always be unique. This is because you have a unique genetic makeup. In both males and females, it is not known how far pattern baldness will progress. [1]

It’s normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day. It is normal to see some hair shed in the shower or on your brush. If you think you are losing more than this amount, however, you may be suffering from some form of hair loss. The most common forms of hair loss are: Androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness) telogen effluvium, and trichorrhexis nodosa.[1]

Male pattern baldness generally follows two predictable patterns: a receding hairline and thinning at the crown. On the other hand, women slowly and gradually experience thinning across the central area of the scalp. [1][2]

Hair Loss in Men
-
Male pattern baldness is primarily a hereditary condition. It is largely caused by the genetic influence of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In hair follicles that are genetically sensitive, DHT binds to receptors in the hair follicles and prevents the growth stage. This causes the big follicles to become tiny follicles that then form shorter and thinner hairs. Eventually it reaches a point where the hair no longer grows. [1][2]

DHT is found in many tissues of the human body. It can also be found in scalp hair follicles. [1]

The best way to know if you have hair loss due to male pattern baldness is to check which parts of your scalp have thinning hair or hair loss. Male pattern hair loss will not affect the back or sides of your scalp. With male pattern hair loss the hair loss begins above both temples. When this happens, hair also beings to thin on the top of the head (the crown or vertex). Over time, the hair at the temple continues to recede and the hair loss on the crown becomes bigger.[1]

One study notes Androgenetic alopecia, (male pattern baldness) has a clear genetic cause and that is like caused by an excessive response to androgen.[1] Other studies conducted on twins have confirm that male pattern baldness hair loss is genetic. [2] It is commonly thought that hair loss is inherited from your mother’s side. Baldness is on the X chromosome, which you get from your mother, however, it appears that both parents contribute to your chances of becoming bald. Also more often than not if your father suffers from male pattern baldness then you are likely to lose hair in a similar way. Scientists have even said that hair loss in anyone in your family can increase your chances of going bald.

You may look at your father and, if he is bald, assume that you inherited his balding genes. The fact is balding is more complicated than that, as it is also inherited from your mother’s side. Experts have done extensive research into the genetics of hair loss. The results are not yet conclusive. Experts are still not exactly sure how the balding genes get passed down from one generation to the next. However, no one parent is responsible for your balding. [1]

Some hair loss conditions are related to stress. However, male pattern baldness is a genetic condition. If your hair suddenly starts falling out in clumps this is likely to be caused by a different hair loss condition, which may be linked to stress. There is no evidence to suggest that sexual frustration can cause hair loss. [1]

Male pattern baldness only affects scalp hairs. Other areas of the body such as the beard or armpits are not affected by male pattern baldness, but may be affected by Alopecia Areata. [1]

Not everyone with male pattern baldness will necessarily become bald. Sometimes hair loss ends up leaving you completely bald, although this is uncommon. You may find that you only experience thinning of the hair. Alternatively, you may lose most of your hair. The younger you lose your hair, the higher chance you have of becoming bald. If for example you start losing your hair at 18 you are likely to become bald. Also, if your hair loss is very aggressive you may also end up bald. [1]

-
Even if you have not inherited the male pattern baldness gene, when you get to a certain age your hair may start thinning. This is because hair follicles begin to minituarize (become smaller). The result is hair that contains full hair and minituarized hairs. This causes an overall appearance of hair that is less full. In all men, the scalp undergoes this aging process to different degrees. [1]

There is a relationship between male pattern baldness and prostate growth. This is no surprise as both conditions are related to DHT levels in the body. An enlarge prostate is generally connected to urinary symptoms: for example more frequent urination. A study found that urinary flow changes were higher in patients with early-onset male pattern baldness than in healthy subjects. [1]

I am a young man with long hair. Does this mean that I will be more likely to go bald later in life?
No. Having long hair in your younger years will not have an effect on your degree of balding later in life. The length of your hair does not affect its health in anyway. Hair grows in cycles and will naturally fall out when it has reached the end of a cycle.

According to an expert in the field, dry shampoos can make your scalp feel and appear sandy and grainy. Dry shampoo can also dry out your hair, making it fragile. This can make it brittle and dry. Dry shampoo products can also cause scalp rash, which can create inflammation that reduces hair growth.[1]

Hair loss generally begins slowly and only becomes noticeable after many years of gradual loss. You can, however, pick up on signs that your hair is thinning. Women who have hair loss may find that they have a general thinning of their hair. They may also notice that they are losing hair on the top of their head, specifically along the part. [1]

Damaged hair is dry, brittle and has split ends that can easily break. The hair may appear to be more delicate, and you may find that you cannot easily style your damaged hair. When hair is weak, it tends to break near the scalp or at the ends. Hair damage is a short-term problem that can be treated fairly easily. You can also simply grow out your damaged hair. [1]

Most causes of hair loss affect both men and women to equal degrees. There are some hair loss causes that are specific to women. These include: pregnancy and childbirth. When you are pregnant or after you give birth, your hormone levels can be off balance, which can result in abnormal hair growth cycles. The birth control pill can also affect your hormones and impact your hair growth cycles. [1]

When you visit your health practitioner, they will carry out a series of tests to rule out low iron, thyroid problems or other common causes of hair loss. Tests for hair loss may include: blood tests, skin biopsies, or microscopic examination of your hair. If your hair appears ‘patchy,’ your health professional will tell you that this is not typical of female pattern hair loss. It is likely that they will tell from the look of your hair, if your hair loss is a result of female pattern hair loss. [1]

Most women tend to experience a slow progression of hair loss. However, if you find that you are starting to lose hair in your 20s, you may find that your hair loss progresses more quickly. Not many women lose all of their hair. Hair loss can, however, become quite noticeable.[1] [2]

During pregnancy changes in your hormones, specifically estrogen, prevents your usual rate of hair loss. You may find that your hair looks thicker and fuller during pregnancy because you are loosing less hair. After you give birth, however, there is a sudden drop in your hormone levels. You may find that clumps of your hair begin to fall out. This excessive shedding of hair is known as post-partum telogen effluvium. [1]

Yes. You may develop a condition called traction alopecia. This is hair loss caused to repetitive pulling on your hair. You can get this condition if you wear your hair in tightly-pulled hair styles such as: ponytail, bun or braids. At the beginning this condition may look like little bumps or pimples along the top of your forehead. After a while it will cause hear breakage and hair loss. The way to prevent this problem is to wear your hair in a lose style or not to wear your hair up at all. [1]

Yes. This type of hair loss is called female pattern androgenetic alopecia. It manly affects postmenopausal women. It is primarily caused by changes in your hormones. If you have this condition you will notice that your hair is thinning. This usually takes place on the crown (top of your head) and on your frontal scalp. [1] This is not a harmful disease but it can cause psychological distress.

Telogen effluvium (TE) is very common. Telogen is the name given to the resting stage of the hair growth cycle. TE occurs when a stressful trigger causes the hair roots to go prematurely into a resting state. This means there are more dormant, telogen stage hair follicles. This causes hair to fall out; TE hair loss. Up to 70% of scalp hairs can be lost. The hair loss appears about 2-3 months after the stressful trigger. TE can be acute (temporary) or chronic. If you suffer from TE you will notice that hair comes out in handfuls. TE is different to gradual genetic hair thinning. [1] [2]
Telogen effluvium, may also occur in response to a number of triggers including fever, hemorrhage, severe illness, stress, and childbirth. [3]

Trichorrhexis nodosa is a problem where thickened or weak points (nodes) develop on your hair shaft. These nodes cause your hair to break off easily. Trichorrhexis nodosa is most commonly caused by the use of hair products and excessive hair styling. Trauma can occur to the hair through frequent brushing scalp massage, hair-permanent liquid and hair dyes. [1] It can also be caused by lengthy and repeated exposure to the suns ultraviolet rays. In some cases trichorrhexis nodosa may also have a genetic element. In some cases trichorrhexis nodosa is caused by an underlying condition such as: thyroid disorder, too much ammonia in the body, or iron deficiency. [2]

Alpopecia Alreata is an autoimmune disease. Alopopecia Alreata occurs when your immune system attacks hair follicles by mistake. Hair follicles are the sacs out of which your hair grows. Alopecia Alreata causes large clumps of hair loss from your scalp. This leaves large patches of smooth baldness on the scalp. Your hair will usually grow back within a few months. You may however find that once some hair has grown back new bald patches appear. In most people the hair loss is temporary but in about 10% of people the hair loss is permanent. [1]

Both these conditions contain the same word alopecia; however, they are very different types of hair loss. Alopecia areata, is an autoimmune disease, whereas androgenetic alopecia is related to hormones. In the case of Alopecia areata hair tends to fall out in small patches around the size of a quarter. In women, androgenetic alopecia causes hair thinning. [1]

While vitamin D from the sun supports healthy hair growth in general the sun can do serious damage to your hair. The sun can make your hair weaker and leave it looking duller. A study published in Collegium Antropologicum found that too much exposure to the sun can cause problems in the structure of the hair shaft. The part of the hair seen above the skin is called the hair shaft. The sun can cause damage to your hair proteins and pigments. [1]

When you blow dry your hair on a daily basis, you will probably cause some degree of damage to your hair. You can try to take protective measures by using a protective styling mousse before you start blow-drying. You can also try to set your dryer to a lower heat and hold it a bit further away from your head than usual. Try not to let the hair dryer come in direct contact with your hair. [1]

There are some styling products that can dry out your hair. Your shampoo may contain harsh ingredients like alcohol that can dry your hair out. Another ingredient to look out for is polyethylene glycol. Polyethylene glycol can stress your hair and make it brittle. Chemicals you use in hair salons may also be doing your hair damage. Chemical straighteners and hair dyes make your hair weaker. Too much consistent heat is also not good for hair. So try not to blow-dry or use hair straighteners too regularly. You can try and use organic products on your hair to keep your hair looking healthy. [1]

Generally speaking, hair care products improve the general appearance of hair. They tend to coat the hair temporarily and mend split ends. Most of the products on the market are for minor hair damage and will not be able to repair badly damaged hair. [1]
